Santa Baby: What You Could Buy with that Student Loan Debt

Trust Nerdwallet to crunch the numbers. According to the site’s research, many Millennials will essentially work until they’re 75 years old. The huge load of an average student debt of $35,051 is not only a stumbling block now, but can sap retirement savings to the tune of $684,474 over the next 50 years. That’s a big fat load of coal in the stocking when it’s measured in terms of merry and happy. Understandably, this generation has a mistrust of many institutions that have all but hatched a plot to keep college grads as indentured servants to their debt.

10 THINGS YOU BUY THIS HOLIDAY SEASON WITH THAT STUDENT LOAN DEBT

#1 – 1,664.33 cases of Maruchan Creamy Chicken flavor ramen noodles at $21.06 per case of 24 – but shipping is free! If you thought that you were sick of this stuff in undergrad, this amount of ramen will feed you three meals a day through your doctoral dissertation.

#2 – 17,603 gallons of regular gas at BJ’s 5100 NW 9th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale, according to Gasbuddy.com.  Does not include storage tank.

#3 – A champagne reception followed by Thanksgiving dinner and wines for eight with on the London Eye for $13,116 at current exchange rates. You can take seven buddies on Virgin Atlantic in economy class outbound  on the 24th and premium economy inbound on the 29th for roughly $10,000, and book four rooms for four nights at the five-star Duke’s hotel. You’ll even have enough left over for taxis.

#4 – If you’ve completely lost your marbles, you can order a little over 2.75 US tons of them to replenish your supply.

#5 – When it’s released, you can buy the Tesla Model 3.

#6 – Three different but very high end bathroom remodels in Chicago, with enough left over for towels, bathrobes, and rubber duckies.

#7 – Book the Hyde Suite for a tier one Miami Heat game for $28,000 and share it with 23 of your buddies. Catering is extra, but you get four VIP parking passes and access to the club downstairs.

#8 – For $55.00 a pop (plus tips and champagne) you can have 637 Sunday Brunches at The Pelican Grand. That’s brunch for 637 people or a whole lot of Sundays.

#9 – On the other hand, you can hit up Tacocraft for Margarita Mondays to the tune of 7,010 of the $5.00 tangy tequila’ed treats.

#10 – And if that’s not enough to convince you, to start getting your student loans in order, then consider carefully the lifetime impact of the debt on your earnings over 50 years. $684,474 is  $13,689 a year that you’ll be working for, but will never see. To put it another way, that’s enough to buy this two-bedroom, 11th floor condominium in Las Olas.
